Nostalgia won’t keep a heritage brand alive in the electric era, but sharp engineering might. Enter the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce – the Italian marque’s long-overdue, fully electric pivot, landing squarely in South Africa’s fiercely contested compact electric crossover segment.
It arrives not as a delicate rear-wheel-drive coupé of the 1960s, but as a front-wheel-drive EV tasked with dragging Alfa Romeo into the modern era. Engineering the Veloce: By the Numbers

Alfa has fitted the Veloce with a Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential – a rarity in front-wheel drive EVs – and dropped the sport suspension by 25 mm. Paired with a kerb weight of just 1 590 kg (remarkably light for a battery-powered SUV), the dynamic profile is explicitly engineered to mimic a hot hatch rather than a bloated battery-hauler.
The R1-Million Question: Relevance in Mzansi
The Junior Veloce serves as Alfa Romeo’s new entry point in South Africa, but pricing remains a significant friction point. At R 1 019 900, it is gunning directly for the Volvo EX30 and BMW iX1.
While the EX30 offers aggressive dual-motor acceleration at a similar price, the Junior Veloce counters with superior boot capacity (400 litres) and a strictly driver-centric cabin featuring deep-set digital pods and highly bolstered Sabelt seats. Its 334 km claimed WLTP range is admittedly modest, meaning it functions best as a hyper-agile urban commuter rather than a cross-country tourer.
Ultimately, the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce is relevant because it proves compact electric crossovers do not have to be dynamically sterile. It is a highly calculated, premium gamble in the South African EV market – one that trades outright range for handling purity and sheer kerb appeal.
