The Bible, revered by millions as the Word of God, is an archive of divine wisdom, historical narratives, and profound teachings. Its pages resonate with tales of triumph, tragedy, and the enduring grace of God. However, not every narrative is meant to be set to music, nor is every lyric deemed suitable for worship.

In the pursuit of artistic expression, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trivializing sacred events or misrepresenting divine truths. The essence of God’s Word, meant to inspire reverence and reflection, can be diluted when adapted carelessly into song. This isn’t merely a matter of artistic license but a question of honouring the sanctity of scripture.

Scripture itself offers guidance on the importance of discernment in musical expression. In Ephesians 5:19, believers are urged to

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.”

This admonition emphasizes the sincerity and spiritual depth required in our musical offerings. When we sing about biblical events, it should be done with reverence and understanding, acknowledging the gravity of the subject matter.

Moreover, the Bible warns against the misuse of music as a tool for deception. In Ezekiel 28:13, Lucifer, before his fall from grace, is described as having been adorned with “every precious stone” and “the workmanship of your timbrels and pipes.” This imagery suggests that music was among the gifts bestowed upon him by God.

However, in his rebellion, Lucifer perverted this gift, using it to sow discord and rebellion against the Almighty.

While music has the potential to uplift and edify, it can also be used as a vessel for false doctrine and spiritual confusion. The devil, ever the cunning adversary, seeks to distort the truth through deceptive melodies, luring believers away from the path of righteousness.

This means exercising discernment in the songs we sing; ensuring that they align with the principles and values espoused by scripture.
