From Waste to Gold: How VW Plant Earned Global Eco Award!

In a remarkable achievement for environmental sustainability, Volkswagen Group Africa’s plant in Kariega has received international recognition for its innovative plastic recycling project.

This initiative earned the plant top honours in the Zero Impact Factory environmental category of the prestigious Challenge of the Brands competition, which saw over 140 entries from across the Volkswagen Group.

Since its launch in 2023, the Kariega plant’s project has successfully diverted 132 tons of plastic waste from landfills – equivalent to the weight of approximately 105 Polo GTIs! This impressive feat is part of the plant’s 2Y24 programme for Production and Logistics, showcasing VWGA’s commitment to reducing environmental impact.

The process involves collecting discarded plastic parts such as grommets and plastic caps from engines and components. These parts are then sorted and transported to Vistarus, a local non-profit organization that supports impoverished and substance-dependent individuals. At Vistarus, the plastic is extruded into pellets, sold, and upcycled into new items like crates.

The income from these recycling efforts covers a significant portion of Vistarus’s operating expenses, providing essential employment for the community. But the success of this project is just one part of VWGA’s broader waste reduction efforts. Since 2021, the company has achieved a 14% reduction in landfill waste, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Ulrich Schwabe, VWGA Production Director, expressed his gratitude for the award:

“On behalf of the Plant Kariega team, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for this award. This recognition not only validates our work but also motivates us to continue supporting and finding new initiatives to contribute to the Volkswagen Group’s environmental strategy.

“As we strive to achieve a Zero Impact Factory in our production plant by 2030, it is essential that we demonstrate a similar commitment to the community. This particular project allows us to have a direct impact on the lives of those in need in our community.”

The award highlights the Kariega plant’s dedication to sustainability and community support, setting a positive example for other facilities within the Volkswagen Group and beyond.
