It’s all about the spin for Cape Town’s Brenner family

When speaking about Drift Outlaws, sister series to the popular Drift Outlaws, there are several names and faces that can’t be ignored. Among these is the Brenner family who have only gone from strength to strength as they take on the best spinners from Cape Town.

But at the recent Bragging Rights event at Killarney International Raceway, Nithaar Brenner (16) took to the pitch, finishing second and splitting Mano Dada (first) and Muhammad Uzayr Rajah (third) in the Exhibition Spinners category.

The achievement made parents immensely proud as their son continues the passion that’s been a glue in the family.

“As parents, achievements like these will always be proud moments – sometimes overwhelming,” Insaaf said when asked about her son’s second place at Bragging Rights.

Feeding the passion

Ighsaan and Insaaf have a fond passion for spinning, something they have been sharing with their children. When an event takes place, they go together as a family, taking one or more of their four Toyotas to either drive there or participate.

And of course, the bug was going to bite the offspring at some point, with Nithaar following his parents onto the pitch.

“It was our dream that Nithaar follow in our footsteps, but we allowed him to make that decision for himself,” Insaaf says. “He actually taught himself how to spin on a car game and practiced on a homemade simulator.”

Insaaf and Ighsaan noticed Nithaar’s inputs, and it eventually led to them taking the next step and putting him in a real spin car. And the rest, as they say, is history.

“My parents are giving me the freedom to explore my own skills,” Nithaar adds. “So when I enter an event, my intentions are to give it all I’ve got.”

A safe environment

Being 16-years-old, Nithaar’s parents realises that the lure of participating in unsanctioned events can be dangerous for their son. And with him knowing how to operate a car in such extreme conditions, it requires a greater sense of responsibility to ensure he stays accountable.

It is why when Spin Outlaws came into being a few years ago, the Brenners knew that as a family, as a unit, they must set an example – both in their home and to those who look up to them.

“Spin Outlaws is a great platform for the youth and upcoming spinners,” Insaaf adds. “But with the safe and controlled environment at Killarney, Nithaar has a chance to improve his driving skills to the best of his abilities.”

Raziek Rajah, the Race Master for both Spin- and Drift Outlaws, is the mastermind behind both series, and undertook it with the intent to create a safe space for local motorsport heroes participating in spinning and drfting.

But more, he realises that past, current, and future competitors have a place in these sports, but it’s especially the future role models that must be nurtured and molded.

“If anything is not nutured, it simply goes to waste,” Raziek says.

“I was pushed by my son Muhammad Uzayr to do something in spinning that I achieved in drifting. He was the motivation for Spin Outlaws – a series that has become a national serious which has become the only national spinning series in Africa.

“My goal is to leave a legacy that creates positivity and opportunity for future racing generations to come.”
