SVI turns popular Golf GTI into bulletproof crime fighter
SVI Engineering, a specialist in armoured vehicle manufacturing, has introduced a new bullet-resistant version of the Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI, specifically designed for South Africa.
Named the SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI, this vehicle is a rapid-response solution built to withstand high-calibre threats, including rounds from the AK47.
The SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI offers protection against firearms ranging from handguns to rifles, particularly the 7.62×39 mm rounds used in AK47s. This discreetly armoured hot hatch is ideal for urban rapid-response situations and can also serve as a pursuit vehicle or a non-transporting emergency medical services (EMS) vehicle.

Nicol Louw, SVI Business Development Director, highlighted that while hot hatches are often used in rapid-response roles, they typically come with level B4 armour, which does not provide sufficient protection against higher-calibre threats. The SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI addresses this gap, offering enhanced ballistic protection without compromising the vehicle’s speed and performance. He said:
“Hot hatches are well suited to rapid-response duties but are generally available only with level B4 armour, leaving occupants vulnerable to higher ballistic threats. The SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI is our solution to that problem and may just be the fastest way to reach the scene of an in-progress crime, without compromising on ballistic protection.”
The bullet-resistant package, unveiled at Securex 2024 at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Gauteng, features custom-fabricated B4+ body armour and special ballistic glass. This armouring kit can be applied to both the front-wheel-drive Golf 8 GTI and the all-wheel-drive Golf 8 R.
SVI’s engineering team developed a bespoke package for the Golf 8 to ensure protection against AK47 rounds. The vehicle’s armour includes 3.5 mm steel plating and lightweight ballistic glass capable of stopping four AK47 shots within a 300 mm square area.
The driver’s window remains operable, though it can only be lowered halfway. High-grade armoured steel is used in key areas like the doors, pillars, and roof, with composites intentionally excluded from the design.

To manage the vehicle’s weight and cost, SVI implemented a rear bulkhead solution complemented by a camera feed to the rear-view mirror, eliminating the need for armouring the tailgate. Critical components such as the powertrain and battery are also protected, and the suspension has been upgraded to handle the additional weight of the armour, which adds approximately 340 kg to the vehicle.
Despite the added weight, the vehicle maintains its performance. The Golf 8 GTI’s turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine delivers 180 kW and 370 Nm to the front wheels, while the Golf 8 R’s engine produces 235 kW and 400 Nm with all-wheel-drive.

In response to the increasing crime rates in South Africa, Louw emphasized that the SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI offers a fresh solution by providing both speed and protection for rapid responders in the private security sector and beyond.
“In South Africa, it’s become patently clear that the round-the-clock fight against crime needs fresh solutions. The SVI AK47 Golf 8 GTI is exactly that and equips rapid responders – in the private security sector and beyond – with both the required speed and the required protection.”
The armouring package for the Volkswagen Golf 8, applicable to both the GTI and R variants, is priced at R649 500, excluding VAT and the cost of the base vehicle. The build time for the project is approximately three months.
