Our hands are instruments in fulfilling God’s purpose for us
“The lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the works of your hands.”
Psalm 138:8 (ESV)
In Psalm 138:8, we find a profound promise and a timeless truth wrapped in divine assurance. The psalmist declares, “The Lord will vindicate me,” acknowledging the sovereignty and faithfulness of God. Embedded within this verse is a profound invitation to align our lives with the purpose God has ordained for us.
God’s desire for us to fulfil His purpose on earth is not arbitrary; it is rooted in His eternal plan and unfailing love for us. He has intricately designed each of us with unique talents, gifts, and callings. Just as a master craftsman meticulously shapes his creation, God has formed us with purpose and intentionality.
Yet, our journey to fulfilling God’s purpose is not merely about achieving personal success or recognition. It is about glorifying Him in all that we do. The works of our hands must be consecrated to His glory, reflecting His character and majesty to the world around us.
Why does God place such emphasis on the works of our hands being for His glory?
Firstly, it acknowledges God as the source of all our abilities and accomplishments. Every talent, skill, and opportunity we possess is a gift from Him. When we use these gifts to serve His kingdom and advance His purposes, we honour Him as the ultimate giver.
Secondly, it aligns our hearts with His will and purposes. When our primary aim is to bring glory to God, our motives are purified, and our actions are guided by love and obedience. Our pursuit of success and fulfilment is transformed into a pursuit of God’s kingdom, where His righteousness and glory reign supreme.
Thirdly, it testifies to the transforming power of God in our lives. As we yield to His guidance and allow Him to work through us, we become living testimonies of His grace and mercy. Our lives become a reflection of His love, drawing others into a relationship with Him.
As we meditate on Psalm 138:8, let us recommit ourselves to fulfilling God’s purpose with reverence and diligence. May we offer our talents, our dreams, and our ambitions as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1). And in doing so, may we experience the joy of knowing that we are not abandoned but held securely in the hands of our loving Creator, who delights in the fulfilment of His purposes in and through us.
