Supporters’ backing makes rugby captaincy easier, says Roses’ Elshaun
When Elshaun Davids first took up rugby at just seven-years-old at Hillcrest Primary School, it was the start of one of the most significant undertakings in his life.
Now, many years later, he is still living out his passion for the Boland’s favourite sport, leading from the front as the Roses United Rugby Club’s first team captain.
“My rugby career started at home, when we used to play outside in the road,” the newly-appointed captain for 2024 says. “That was hard rugby!”
“But I’ve been with the Roses now for 10 years, and I think every player can say that they enjoy being here, because the culture allows you to enjoy your rugby.”
Appreciating the support
Like many clubs, the Roses know where to find their biggest motivation: in the supporters.
Weekend in and out, the fans come out in full force to support their club and players, leaving the local Pelikaan Park stadium packed to the brim, voicing support at the top of their lungs.
It’s a feeling second to none, and Elshaun is certain that it only feeds the players to play better.
“Without our supporters, we are nothing,” he says.
“They always come out in their numbers, and the players appreciate it. It excites us to go out every game knowing that they are there. They give us the energy to do what we do!”
The Roses United Rugby Club understands that it is more than just a place for players to come together, but that it is an entity that also manages to bring a community together.
The club has been in operation since 2000 and continues to uplift and motivate the community it serves.
